Tomar

CITY OF THE TEMPLARS

Ancient, mysterious and beautiful city, Tomar was the headquarters of the Templars in Portugal.

Its medieval alleys, the old Jewish quarter and its imposing monuments transport us to different moments in the History of Portugal.

Visit the Convent of Christ (UNESCO World Heritage Site), the Templar Castle, the Synagogue or the Pegões Aqueduct and stroll through the eras of the Reconquista and Portuguese Discoveries.

If you want a guided tour in Portuguese, French or English, contact us! We know an excellent guide!

Water activities

RIVER BEACHES

Our area is surrounded by rivers. Nabão is the river of the city of Tomar, Zêzere is the river of the Castelo do Bode dam and the Tagus river passes through some neighbouring towns and villages. Every river is unique and offer different types of activities.

Go swimming on beautiful river beaches, go canoeing with “mini-rapids” or moderate currents, go on a jet ski adventure, take wakeboarding and wake surfing lessons or ride a boat in calm, crystal-clear waters….
Choose the river that floats your boat!

Good wine

GOOD FOOD

Ribatejo is a land of good food, with traditional flavours linked to fishing in the Tagus River and its tributaries, to the animals of our fields and farms, and to the cultivation of corn, olive trees, vineyards, and fig trees.
Our local cuisine pair well with Tejo wines (DOC). We recommend the tastings organized by Quinta do Casal das Freiras, 6 km from Casa da Avó Genoveva, with mandatory prior booking.

Related to the history of Tomar, you can also taste Templar delicacies and medieval dishes.

Come and savour our land!

FAIRS AND FESTIVALS

Tomar and several nearby towns and villages host festivals and fairs throughout the year. The famous Tabuleiros Festival in Tomar takes place in July, every four years; every August, you can enjoy the best music in the world at the Bons Sons Festival in Cem Soldos.

In November, the Golegã Fair is celebrated, focusing on the theme of horses, our great passion. A little further away, in Constância, the beautiful festival of Our Lady of Safe Travel takes place in April.

Walks

NATURE TRAILS

Trekking lovers have fantastic trails overlooking the Zêzere River, such as the Dornes Trail, with different levels of difficulty. Along the banks of the Nabão River there are other surprising routes that pass through beautiful waterfalls.

The walk through the Sete Montes National Forest, at the foot of the Templar Castle of Tomar, or the walk to the Pegões Aqueduct are other of our favourite trails.
The Natural Park Serra de Aire e dos Candeeiros is a 30-minute drive from Casa da Avó Genoveva. If you prefer to be accompanied during these tours, we know an excellent guide.
